Barbados Room Tax and Holiday Costs Explained: What We Actually Paid in 2026
If you’re planning a holiday to Barbados, one of the biggest questions is often:
How much does Barbados actually cost?
There are accommodation levies to understand, restaurant bills may include tax and service charges, and overall costs can vary a lot depending on how you choose to holiday.
As owners of Carizma Villa near Speightstown, we visit Barbados ourselves regularly, so rather than just giving estimated prices, we thought it would be more useful to share some real prices from our June 2026 trip.
What is the Barbados room tax?
You may hear it described as a room tax, tourist tax or accommodation levy.
For vacation rental accommodation such as Carizma Villa, Barbados currently applies a Shared Economy Levy of 10% of the accommodation cost.
So, for example:
BDS$2,000 accommodation = BDS$200 Shared Economy Levy
When comparing accommodation prices, it is worth checking whether the levy is already included or added separately.
At Carizma Villa, we make the accommodation price and any applicable levy clear when guests enquire or book.
What does breakfast cost in Barbados?
Breakfast costs can vary quite a lot depending on what sort of morning you want.
When we stay at Carizma, we don’t eat out for breakfast every day. Some mornings we have breakfast at the villa, which is easy and keeps costs down. Other mornings we’ll walk into Speightstown and visit one of the local bakeries or cafés we’ve mentioned in our breakfast in Speightstown blog.
Sometimes we’ll have a full breakfast, sometimes just coffee and something light, and sometimes we’ll share.
Here’s one real example from our June 2026 stay.
At Pier One at Port St Charles Yacht Club, near Speightstown, our breakfast for two included:
Eggs and smoked salmon — BDS$37.45
Lite breakfast — BDS$32.34
Side of bacon — BDS$15.32
Two cappuccinos — BDS$20.42
Subtotal: BDS$105.53
The bill then included:
VAT — BDS$18.47
Service charge (12.5%) — BDS$13.19
Total: BDS$137.19
This is just one example rather than what you should expect to spend every morning.
You can spend much less by having breakfast at the villa, picking up something from a local bakery, choosing a lighter café breakfast or sharing something between you.
That flexibility is one of the things we enjoy about staying near Speightstown — you can decide each morning whether to eat in or head out somewhere local.
What does coffee and a light bite cost?
At Italia Coffee at Grantley Adams International Airport in June 2026, we had:
Grande caffe latte — BDS$11.45
Oat milk supplement — BDS$3.15
Tall mocha frappe — BDS$11.95
Quiche Lorraine — BDS$14.85
Subtotal: BDS$41.40
How much is a taxi from Barbados Airport to Carizma Villa?
This is another cost visitors often want to know before travelling.
On 26 June 2026, our authorised airport taxi from Grantley Adams International Airport to Heywoods, St Peter cost:
BDS$179 for two people
We had three pieces of luggage.
Taxi prices may change, so this should be treated as a guide rather than a fixed fare.
Do you need to hire a car at Carizma Villa?
Not necessarily — and that is one of the advantages of Carizma’s location.
Heywoods Beach and Speightstown are around a 10–12 minute walk away, giving you access to beaches, cafés, restaurants, supermarkets, shops and public transport without needing to drive everywhere.
Some guests choose not to hire a car at all.
Others hire one for just a few days so they can explore more of Barbados, then walk or use public transport for the rest of their stay.
The car hire company we use
When we hire a car ourselves, we usually use Rolling with Rollins, run by Bek and Paul.
We’ve found them reliable and straightforward to deal with, and we’re happy to recommend them based on our own experience.
They offer small automatic cars, which we find ideal for getting around Barbados.

Self-catering can make a big difference
One of the advantages of staying in a villa is being able to mix eating out with eating at home.
At Carizma Villa you have your own:
Kitchen
Fridge-freezer
Indoor dining area
Outdoor dining terrace
That gives you plenty of flexibility.
Some days you might eat out for breakfast or lunch and then have something simple at the villa later. Other days you may prefer to prepare breakfast before heading to the beach or pick up food locally and eat on the terrace.
For a longer stay in particular, that can make quite a difference to the overall holiday budget.
Barbados doesn’t have to be expensive every day
It is easy to spend money in Barbados, but some of the best days don’t need to cost much at all.
You could:
Spend the morning at the beach
Walk into Speightstown
Use buses for some journeys
Have breakfast at the villa
Pick up something from a local bakery or café
Eat an evening meal on the terrace
Hire a car for only part of your stay
Choose a few special excursions rather than booking something every day
That is one of the reasons we like being based near Speightstown.
You can have a lovely Barbados day without needing to spend heavily from morning until night.
How much spending money should you allow for Barbados?
There isn’t one figure that works for everyone.
A couple eating at high-end West Coast restaurants every evening and using taxis every day will need a very different budget from guests who self-cater some meals, walk into Speightstown and use buses.
We find it easier to divide the holiday budget into a few areas.
Food and drink Allow for a mixture of groceries, local bakeries, cafés and restaurant meals.
Transport Include airport transfers, taxis, public transport and any car hire.
Activities Choose the excursions that really matter to you.
Extras Allow something for drinks, shopping, souvenirs and spontaneous days out.
